1981 Yamaha SG800 – Black Road Worn Banger with Vintage Swagger! – The Black Beast That Refuses to Die
“Looks like it survived the apocalypse. Plays like the devil himself tuned it.”
This is not a “pretty” guitar.
This is a 1981 Yamaha SG-800S in factory Black that has been dragged through every smoky bar, beer-soaked stage, and late-night van ride from Tokyo to Osaka and back for the last 44 years. It’s road-worn, battle-scarred, and dripping with more mojo than most boutique builders could fake in ten lifetimes.
The finish? Yeah, it’s gone “Yamaha cloudy” – that legendary nitro fog and slight yellowing/greenish tint that every single well-played black SG from this era gets. The top has buckle rash you could read like a treasure map, dozens of tiny dings along the edges, pick scratches deep enough to hide some secrets. Zero breaks, zero repairs, zero excuses – just pure rock ’n’ roll mileage.
And that’s exactly why it sounds like a freight train full of thunder.
Fresh off a full pro setup (because even war horses deserve a spa day):
- Action: Stupid low and scary fast
- Neck: Straight, perfect relief, zero issues
- Original jumbo frets leveled & crowned & polished
- Intonation dead-on, new 10-52s
- Original Yamaha “Dragon Tail” humbuckers – hot, thick, and snarling
- All electronics cleaned – zero crackle, instant response
Crank it and prepare for takeoff. The neck pickup is pure PAF-on-steroids cream, the bridge is a chainsaw with manners, and the coil-split (yes, factory push/pull) gives you the nastiest, clearest single-coil bite this side of a Tele on fire. It does AC/DC crunch, Zeppelin grind, Thin Lizzy twin-lead glory, and still cleans up for jazzy chords when you roll back. Sustain? This set-neck mahogany monster laughs at the word “note decay.”
Specs that matter:
- 1981 Yamaha SG-800S (not the later Taiwan stuff – real Japanese Fujigen-era)
- Gloss Black nitro (now perfectly aged and cloudy – wear it like a badge)
- Mahogany body + set mahogany neck
- Ebony board, block inlays, 22 jumbo frets
- Original Yamaha open-coil humbuckers with coil-split
- Brass nut, Tune-o-matic + stop tail, gold hardware (now tastefully relic’d)
- Comes in vintage hardshell case that’s just as beaten-up and cool
These early ‘80s black SG-800S guitars are stupid rare in any condition – and the road-worn ones are the ones players fight over in dark alleys. This isn’t a collector piece. This is a lifelong tone companion that’s already proven it can survive anything you throw at it.
Want the meanest, baddest, most alive SG on the planet that looks like it just walked off a 1981 Japanese tour bus?
Slide into my DMs before I decide it’s earned the right to stay on my wall forever.
