1987 Fender Japan JBR-80 Pro Feel Jazz Bass – Precision, Punch & Pure MIJ Magic

Serious bassists, take note: here’s a rare opportunity to own a circa 1987 Fender Japan JBR-80 Pro Feel Jazz Bass — a high-water-mark instrument from one of the finest eras of Japanese Fender production. It's a highly regarded, modern-style active Jazz Bass. This specific model is a rare find because it does not appear in the official Fender Japan catalogs from 1987. The "JBR" line was not officially cataloged until around 1990 (as the JBR-800), making these 1987 units rare, early predecessors built ahead of their time.

Built with the legendary attention to detail that made 1980s MIJ Fenders legendary, this Pro Feel Jazz Bass delivers the classic dual-single-coil snap, growl, and clarity that defined the Jazz Bass sound, elevated by the refined playability the Pro Feel series was known for. The finish still looks rich and vibrant, and the overall condition is excellent for its age — clean, solid, and free of any structural issues or heavy wear. Just honest, well-preserved character from nearly four decades of careful ownership.

Professionally set up and meticulously dialed in, this bass is ready to perform. Optimal action, precise intonation, and effortless playability mean you can lock in tight grooves, articulate fast lines, or dig in for aggressive fingerstyle and pick attack with confidence. Expect that classic Jazz Bass voice: deep, defined lows, focused mids, and sparkling highs that cut through any mix without getting muddy.

Whether you’re tracking in the studio, holding down the low end on stage, or simply looking for an inspiring practice instrument, this JBR-80 delivers the tone, feel, and reliability that serious players demand. These late-’80s Japanese Pro Feel models have earned a devoted following for good reason — they often outperform far more expensive modern instruments.

Don’t let this one get away. A true player’s bass in excellent condition, fully sorted and ready to make music.

Key Specifications & Features

  • Body Material: Premium Japanese Ash (Sen Ash). It features a smaller, sleek, "Dinky" shaped Jazz Bass body that makes it lighter and well-balanced.
  • Neck & Fingerboard: 22-fret maple neck. Available with either a Maple (M) or Rosewood (R) fingerboard.
  • Contoured Heel Joint: An unusual premium feature for Fender at the time, the neck joint features a smooth heel cut to allow comfortable, unhindered access to the upper frets.
  • Electronics & Pickups: Equipped with an active 2-band EQ circuit paired with covered, EMG-style active pickups. This delivers a punchy, crisp, high-output modern tone rather than a traditional vintage growl.
  • Hardware: Heavy-duty, high-mass bridge for increased sustain and tuning stability.
  • Finishes: Most commonly seen in a stunning Natural (NAT / NT) gloss finish that showcases the highly grained ash wood, as well as occasional burst variations.

This guitar is professionally set up and dialed in for optimal tone and playability. It has low action with no buzzing or dead spots and is an absolute joy to play. It has been deep cleaned and detailed. All guitars will arrive looking and playing great. The frets have been leveled / dressed / polished and the fingerboard was cleaned. (Unfinished Rosewood and Ebony boards get treated with Fret Doctor - a proprietary all natural oil that is the best on the market) It has brand new strings, the action was adjusted, the intonation is spot on and it plays excellent. All the electronics work flawlessly.
