🔥 1970s JAPANESE HUMMINGBIRD MAGIC — CIRCA 1973 PEARL PF-250 IN CHERRY SUNBURST 🔥
Here’s a rare slice of early-’70s Japanese craftsmanship: a circa 1973 Pearl PF-250, a high-quality Gibson Hummingbird copy built by the respected Hayashi Gakki factory (the same shop associated with legendary luthier Yasuo Momose). Finished in a rich cherry sunburst, this square-shoulder dreadnought looks the part and delivers the goods.
It features the cooler script Pearl logo on the headstock (the desirable early version that was phased out in 1973) plus a super cool factory-original stinger on the back of the headstock for maximum period flair.
For a guitar more than 50 years old, the condition is excellent. Just a few light dings and scratches, primarily on the back, with the rest of the instrument remaining very clean and well-preserved. No major issues, no structural concerns — just honest, light wear that gives it authentic vintage character without detracting from its beauty. It’s been professionally set up and is ready to play right out of the case. And yes… it sounds great.
The Specs & Heritage
These short-run Pearl acoustics were made during a brief window in the early-to-mid 1970s when Pearl (yes, the drum company) produced a limited line of premium Japanese copies aimed at the domestic market. The PF-250 is their take on the classic Gibson Hummingbird:
• Body style: Square-shoulder dreadnought (Hummingbird-inspired)
• Top: Spruce
• Back & Sides: Bubinga
• Neck: Mahogany
• Fingerboard & Bridge: Rosewood
• Inlays: Mother-of-pearl (including attractive headstock ornamentation)
• Early script Pearl logo on the headstock (phased out in 1973)
• Factory-original stinger on the back of the headstock
• Tuners: Vintage-style covered machines
• Adjustable saddle on many examples for easy action tweaks
• Lightweight and resonant construction typical of the better Hayashi-built instruments of the era
It’s a well-made, responsive guitar that punches above its weight — the kind of high-quality Japanese vintage piece that has developed a cult following among players who know.
The Sound
This PF-250 offers a lovely, deeply balanced voice with excellent response and rich body resonance. Expect clear, articulate highs, warm midrange, and solid projection with a natural sense of “reverb” or bloom that fills the room. It has that classic dreadnought power and presence while retaining enough clarity and note separation for both strumming and fingerstyle. Years of settling have opened it up nicely — it sounds mature, lively, and musical. Professionally set up, it’s dialed in to let that vintage Japanese tone shine.
The Playability
Comfortable neck, good frets, and a professional setup mean this guitar is a pleasure under the hands. Action is smooth and inviting, intonation is solid, and the whole instrument feels balanced and inspiring. Whether you’re laying down rhythm, picking intricate patterns, or just jamming, it responds quickly and encourages you to keep playing.
Cool early-’70s details (that script logo and original headstock stinger are killer), genuine Japanese build quality, great tone, and excellent playability — all in a clean example that won’t break the bank compared to a real Gibson Hummingbird of similar age. Perfect for the player who wants classic square-shoulder style and character without the collector-level price tag.
This Pearl PF-250 is ready for its next chapter. Grab it while it’s here.

- Intonation is spot-on.
- Professionally set up with low action and new American-made strings.
- All frets are dressed, leveled, crowned (if needed), and all frets on all guitars are polished to shine like new with no divots.
Return Policy, Restocking Fees & No Tire-Kicking Policy
We follow Reverb’s 7-day return policy. However:
- You must
notify us in writing within 3 days of delivery (per tracking) of your intent to return.
- Original shipping and return shipping costs are not refunded unless the guitar is damaged in transit or is significantly not as described.
- A 15% restocking fee applies to all returns for any reason other than damage in transit or significantly not as described. Please note there is a 10% restocking fee on guitar orders that have been purchased and paid for - that have been off the market for 24 hours or more, even if they have not been shipped or picked up by the carrier. We perform a final set up and change strings put when an order is placed and paid for. NO EXCEPTIONS
We do our best to honestly describe and photograph every guitar and most of the noticeable imperfections. That said, we are human, if something very small can be overseen, if tiny marks, dings or super fine scratches (normal wear) bother you, please don't buy.
We record demo videos of every guitar before shipping to document exact condition and performance. Additional photos, measurements, or in-hand descriptions are available upon request prior to purchase.
Minor adjustments and tweaks to a set up (for example to correct a slight buzz or truss-rod tweak) are normal after shipping due to carrier mishandling the package, climate & atmospheric changes, especially when moving from South Florida to colder or less humid environments. These slight issues do not constitute “significantly not as described.” Guitars must be returned in the exact same condition as received/advertised or additional repair/restocking fees will apply.
We are a small family owned and run business, not a big-chain retailer. We invest significant time, money and effort into every guitar. This is a NO TIRE-KICKING shop. There is no post purchase haggling, returns without restocking fees or partial refunds. If minor cosmetic marks, tiny imperfections, or the possibility of a post-shipping setup tweak makes you uncomfortable, please do not buy. Plenty of large retailers offer free trials and can absorb shipping costs—we do not.
Payment, Shipping & International Duties
- All items can be shipped internationally. Buyer is fully responsible for all import duties, taxes, and customs fees.
- We accept PayPal, PayPal Credit, Affirm, and other major payment methods.
- Most U.S. shipments are sent via UPS or FedEx with full insurance, tracking, and signature confirmation. All packages are professionally packed for maximum protection.
