1981 Tokai Love Rock LS-60 – Lawsuit-Era MIJ Gem with Stunning Semi-Quilted / Birdseye Maple Top
Ready for a true Japanese legend that punches way above its weight? Here’s a 1981 Tokai Love Rock LS-60, a classic from the golden “lawsuit era” when Tokai’s craftsmanship was so good it rivaled (and often beat) the American giants of the day.
This is a pure Made-in-Japan LS-60, confirmed by the small oval “60” sticker on the back of the headstock (marking the original 60,000-yen tier) and the serial number starting with “1” — the definitive code for a 1981 build. Under the hood you’ll find period-correct open-coil Gotoh zebra bobbin humbuckers (the sought-after Tokai ’57 PAF / Gotoh PAF style) that deliver warm, articulate, vintage-inspired PAF tone with plenty of clarity and growl.
What makes this one special is the top. While most LS-60s of the era wore plain or mildly flamed multi-piece maple caps, this example scored a beautiful semi-quilted / birdseye maple top — the kind of “wild card” premium figuring that collectors go crazy for. These high-grade cuts occasionally slipped onto mid-tier models during Tokai’s glory years, giving an LS-60 the visual drama usually reserved for the much higher LS-120 or even LS-200 models. The result is a striking, three-dimensional figure that shifts and dances in the light.
Condition: Excellent for its Age, with a few light dings, dents and surface scratches. (mostly on the back, edges and face of the headstock) see pics.
Specs that matter:
• Solid mahogany back with that figured maple top
• Set mahogany neck with rosewood fretboard
• Traditional 2-screw Gibson-style truss-rod cover (correct for early Japanese production)
• Classic single-cut Les Paul-inspired design built with the precision and attention to detail that made 1980–82 Tokais legendary
This is the kind of guitar that feels alive under your hands — resonant, heavy yet balanced, and full of character. Whether you’re chasing authentic early-’80s Japanese boutique vibe, a killer-sounding player’s instrument, or a collectible piece of lawsuit-era history with an unusually figured top, this 1981 Tokai LS-60 delivers on every level.
Serious inquiries only — this one is a standout. Message for more details and photos. Don’t sleep on a true wild-card beauty from Tokai’s golden years!

Neck & Setup - (unless otherwise noted)
- Neck is perfectly straight with no truss-rod issues.
- Intonation is spot-on.
- Professionally set up with low action and new American-made strings.
- All frets are dressed, leveled, crowned (if needed), and all frets on all guitars are polished to shine like new with no divots.
Return Policy, Restocking Fees & No Tire-Kicking Policy
We follow Reverb’s 7-day return policy. However:
- You must
notify us in writing within 3 days of delivery (per tracking) of your intent to return.
- Original shipping and return shipping costs are not refunded unless the guitar is damaged in transit or is significantly not as described.
- A 15% restocking fee applies to all returns for any reason other than damage in transit or significantly not as described. Please note there is a 10% restocking fee on guitar orders that have been purchased and paid for - that have been off the market for 24 hours or more, even if they have not been shipped or picked up by the carrier. We perform a final set up and change strings put when an order is placed and paid for. NO EXCEPTIONS
We do our best to honestly describe and photograph every guitar and most of the noticeable imperfections. That said, we are human, if something very small can be overseen, if tiny marks, dings or super fine scratches (normal wear) bother you, please don't buy.
We record demo videos of every guitar before shipping to document exact condition and performance. Additional photos, measurements, or in-hand descriptions are available upon request prior to purchase.
Minor adjustments and tweaks to a set up (for example to correct a slight buzz or truss-rod tweak) are normal after shipping due to carrier mishandling the package, climate & atmospheric changes, especially when moving from South Florida to colder or less humid environments. These slight issues do not constitute “significantly not as described.” Guitars must be returned in the exact same condition as received/advertised or additional repair/restocking fees will apply.
We are a small family owned and run business, not a big-chain retailer. We invest significant time, money and effort into every guitar. This is a NO TIRE-KICKING shop. There is no post purchase haggling, returns without restocking fees or partial refunds. If minor cosmetic marks, tiny imperfections, or the possibility of a post-shipping setup tweak makes you uncomfortable, please do not buy. Plenty of large retailers offer free trials and can absorb shipping costs—we do not.
